Profile and Credentials
Dr. Ackerman is Adjunct Associate Professor of Epidemiology in the UCLA School of Public Health. She teaches methods to critically evaluate clinical research. She also serves as Director of the Health Outcomes Core for the UCLA Integrative Medicine Program to evaluate the various mind/body interventions provided to patients at UCLA clinics. She has studied Philosophy (B.A., University of Wisconsin – Madison), Pharmacology (M.S., University of Wisconsin – Madison), and Epidemiology (Ph.D., UCLA). As a clinical research scientist, Dr. Ackerman has nearly 30 years of experience in the methods to evaluate treatments and to identify characteristics of patients who respond to specific therapies. She is the recipient of numerous grants from the National Institutes of Health for her research to evaluate conventional medical interventions for anxiety and mood disorders. Her research and that of many others has demonstrated the importance of cultural and psychological factors, including an individual’s beliefs, expectations, and attitudes towards his or her symptoms and treatment on the healing process. As an intuitive therapist, Dr. Ackerman has pursued a parallel path. She has studied dream analysis, I Ching, meditation, pranic healing, Reiki, runes, tarot, theta (wave) healing, yoga, astrology, palmistry, and other methods to bridge the subconscious with higher consciousness. She has found that through these techniques, an individual can choose positive over negative emotions. She has seen the positive effects of positive emotions -- forgiveness, compassion, and love – to heal the self and others.
Philosophy and Comments
Positive emotional states promote health, well-being and resilience. Negative emotional states can have the opposite effects and leave us vulnerable to somatic and psychological ailments. When negative emotions predominate we may eventually find ourselves trapped by fears, stuck in unfulfilling jobs, or lonely in our closest relationships. Most of us are born with the capacity to experience both positive and negative emotion equally. Life experience, cultural conditioning, and genetic susceptibility may tilt the scales to a predominantly negative emotional state. We can change. We can re-train our habitual emotional attitudes. Optimism can be learned. It takes will and practice.
