Alaska Birthing is a midwifery and homebirth service with an office in Eagle River but serving the Anchorage to Mat-Su valley area. Susan Terwilliger, owner and licenced midwife of Alaska Birthing, offers complete and professional care throughout the prenatal, delivery, and postpartum time of childbirth. Homebirth is a wonderful option for the healthy woman who wants to give birth without unnecessary interventions in an environment of support and safety.

Susan Terwilliger started studying midwifery in 1983, and began her own homebirth practice in 1988, 17 years ago. She is a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM-a certification with the North American Registry of Midwives), a Documented Midwife in the State of Texas, and a Certified Direct-Entry Midwife (CDM) licensed by the State of Alaska. She has served in Texas state-wide midwifery associations and committees, mentored 9 midwifery students over the years, and attended over 500 women at their births. She leaves a successful practice in Austin,Texas, to continue midwifery service in Alaska.

"One of the most outstanding things I have learned about childbith in the last 2 decades is respect for the individual expression of this momentous and altering time in a woman's and couple's life. Babies come out, but the journey a woman takes to get to the point where she can push her baby out into the world gets little attention in the world of usual obstetrical care. Midwifery holds the door open for women to find their own way to birth, combining time-honored ways with modern technologies and current information.
