Mothers Care Doula Services, LLC

Description

MothersCare Doula Services, LLC has been "mothering" Connecticut and Westchester, NY families since 1993. A doula is a specialized woman for assistance during labor and the postpartum period. A labor doula provides on-going emotional and physical support for the laboring woman and her partner. Studies have found that women who have a labor doula have shorter labors, less C-Sect., and less use of drugs and interventions. The result is greater overall satisfaction with the birth experience.

A postpartum doula is knowledgeable in the care of newborns as well as breastfeeding issues. A doula supplies practical support as well which may include household help such as light housework, laundry for the whole family, cooking, shopping and sibling care.

MothersCare also can provide overnight care, postpartum massage and on-call sibling care during labor.

Profile and Credentials

MothersCare was started by Sheila Marley and Susan Keeney after the birth of Susan's twins, children number four and five. It was clear to Susan after the postpartum care she received by her family and friends, organized by Sheila, that postpartum support is essential to the emotional and physical stability of any family during the postpartum period. With this goal in mind, they have been providing this invaluable support to CT families since 1993. They began also incorporating Labor Support doulas into their business in 1996 after seeing studies that showed the impact on women and their spouses who have on-going emotional and physical support during their labors. Their credentials and basis of their business comes mainly from DONA (Doulas of North America), an organization dedicated to improving birth and postpartum experiences to families in the United States and around the Globe.

Philosophy and Comments

MothersCare's goal is to support and nurture women and thereby support and nurture their families by giving the mom time to adjust to her new baby, and heal from her pregnancy and birth.

We believe that all women deserve to be relieved of their normal responsiblities and given the time to adjust to the new baby and all the major changes that result. In cultures where there are strong postpartum rituals, women don't have postpartum depression, and have few or no breastfeeding problems. In our culture, women have a less defined sense of what to expect postpartum and what's expected of them. Often we equate need with weakness. In reality all women need time to physically and emotionally heal and adjust to the impact of a new baby on their life and family. One doula describes the birth of a baby to a family earthquake. Everyone's place in the family changes and shifts and the result is short-term chaos. Given the time to rest and regroup gives the family time to allow everything to resettle and sort itself out.
