ASH RIOT - This Time I´ll Forgive You...Again

When you´re having a bad day it´s always cool to come home and listen to great tunes to unwind. After picking up this ´Ash Riot´ CD from my PO Box I can safely say this won't be out of my player for a while. I really like what this woman is doing and while many compare her to ´Bif Naked´ and ´Hole´ they fail to recognise this woman in her own right. Yes, Ash Riot leaves me feeling impressed and I felt at ease with her sound from the moment I heard the opening track ´Glamour Glamour´. That opening number is a great Punk Rock N Roll track - Though let´s not forget tracks like ´Heroin Halo´, ´Liar With A Black Heart´ and ´It´s Still Raining´ which are brilliant. While many 1977 Punks may not dig this style of Punk Rock it´s great to see people like Ash Riot and her band playing Rock N Roll with a bit of quality and sincerity. There´s the real deal and there are fakers - Ash Riot is the real deal. She´s one of the best artists to come out of Canada in a long time. Twelve tracks in all and there´s not one you´ll hate - Promise! (Riot) 9.5/10

ASH RIOT INTERVIEW ON FFRUK!
Ash Riot INTERVIEW ON FFRUK!

UK - Wednesday, March 29th 2006 - Ash Riot is the coolest and her recent album just blew me a away. Hailing from Vancouver in Canada this lady and her band are doing a well wicked job and they just have to be heard. I caught up with Ash for an interview and here´s what she had to say:

FFRUK: First off can you introduce yourself to our readers?

AR: Yeah, I’m Ash Riot. A 21-year-old gal from Vancouver, Canada. Things I like include mixtapes, downtown dives, rain, green-ginger tea, singing, screaming, playing geetar and such. I play in a band and I have a record out, which is why I’m answering these questions kindly asked by the cool Mr Steve himself…

FFRUK: You´ve released your debut album ´This Time I Forgive You...Again´ so how has it been selling and what kind of response have you been getting regards reviews?

AR: The response has been wonderful! I honestly didn’t expect people to catch on so fast. I mean, I’ve been playing music since I was 16, playing acoustically at whatever bar or club will have me. It all fell into place with this record, having a band and rocking them live. Folks that listen to the record can tell that this is it for me, this is my life and all I ever want to do. So for whatever great reviews I have or great responses I get, I’m beyond thankful for each one because it’s a push in the right direction.

FFRUK: What inspired you to write the lyrics for the album?

AR: Well when I decided to do the album, I already had about eight songs that I knew I for sure wanted to put on it. From there I wrote more or revamped old tunes that I felt could fit with what I was going for. Lyrically, I realize it’s kind of bitter, haha. But more so, the songs are kind of like a diary of the stages of personal and wordly rebellion. Whether they be rebelling obviously against the world, against a lover, or a friend, it’s all over the record.

FFRUK: From what I can gather is the album self financed?

AR: Yeah. I recorded it at Cosmic Pig Studios here by a guy named Rick Boulter. It’s a basement studio with tons of cool gear. I mean, it has amazing new recording gear, but also some old stuff to experiment with, and that’s what I loved. Rick gave me a good deal and believes in my music, we have the same passion, and having him produce and record it was great!

FFRUK: So what´s the scene like in Canada do you get to play many shows?

AR: You know, the music scene here is passionate, but it needs a revolution honestly. I live about an hour away from Seattle, and there’s so many more live music venues there! We don’t have as many. I’ve played a lot of shows here, and they’ve all been great, but I can’t wait to tour! I’ll put it this way, the Vancouver music scene is sort of like, all the bands hold their own spark and the desire to play and succeed, but there’s not as many ways to actually ignite the spark.

FFRUK: It´s obvious you love Punk Rock N Roll but what attracted you to this scene in the first place?

AR: When I was seven, I heard the Ramones and Black Flag on a mixtape I got at a flea market. Then as those years went on I heard the New York Dolls, X, Joan Jett, Bratmobile, Sonic Youth, The Wipers, Dead Boys, etc; Even the early Green Day records, and everything that they sung about became like the bible for me. It made me happy, to know that no matter how many days I put in at the Christian school I attended, and no matter how many more lectures or strange looks I got from anyone, I had this amazing movement of music that I loved and was accepted in. It’s hard to explain because it’s not like I discovered it, it’s sort of like it was seeking me out and found me or something haha.

FFRUK: If you could play with 3 bands live who would they be and why?

AR: Well, if I could choose bands of the past I’d have to say: Nirvana. Bikini Kill. New York Dolls. Because all of those bands are some of my favorite bands I’ve never had the chance to see live…Current bands: X, Rancid, and Sonic Youth. Because it would be such a rad and diverse show!!

FFRUK: Is this like a full time job for you or are you having to work another job to get by?

AR: I do this most of the time but I teach guitar lessons on the side for some extra cash!

FFRUK: Anyway you´re at a show and you come across an English magazine writer so does he get a kiss?

AR: Yeah sure. Also, I’ll buy him a beer and dedicate to him a little tune.

I´ll remember that, hehe!

FFRUK: What kind of things do you do for fun outside the band?

AR: One thing I love doing is getting on the city bus and letting it take me to wherever. I love to write, so I bring a notebook and an ipod and I just go and see what I create. The cities scenery and culture really inspires me. Friends and tattoos also top the list. I have a thing for really old Bela Lugosi horror films. Any black and white ones are my favorite. etc;

FFRUK: You´re in to being tattooed so how many have you got and which one is most precious to you?

AR: Well I don’t know how many I have down to the exact number, but my most recent one I have is ‘RIOT’ across my knuckles. Recently, I also just got a star on my neck, a Sailor Jerry pinup girl on my wrist, and my lower inside arm is now inked with blue roses, spider webs and a banner that says ‘life won’t wait’. So those are a few newest ventures. They all mean so much to me. When I get tattooed, I don’t spend a lot of time creating and being confident in a design because as soon as it becomes part of my skin, I love it regardless! I’ll send in some photos of my ink sometime.

FFRUK: So what are your plans for the rest of 2006?

AR: To keep working my ass off. I just wanna play shows and meet cool folks along the way. I’m writing new songs for an eventual new record and trying to get touring plans together. Doing all this independently is so much work, but it’s rewarding.

FFRUK: Anything you´d like to add?

AR: Yes, thank you for the interview, you’re cute and I totally promise to make you a mixtape…. As for everyone reading this, rock on, and if you like what you hear, spread the word so I can make it your way to put on a show!

Thanks to Ash for doing the interview and make sure you check this ultra cool lady out. Brilliant person and brilliant music - What more can I say? Go and see for yourselves. This is one lady you´re going to hear more of - Watch this space!

"If there was any doubt of the punk/pop esthetic at work here, the tattoo-parlour endorsement in the liner notes should seal it. The dozen tracks, particularly "Heroin Halo," indicate a future for this woman!" B+

This rocker is a real Riot!

Surrey - - After even a quick study of her song titles and lyric sheet, Ash Riot sounds like a real downer.

But in person, the tattooed Cloverdale rocker is downtown jovial.

Riot-penned songs such as "Cold Water Romance," "It's Still Raining" and "Cyanide (All My Misery)" say little about the songwriter and her "other" life - as a Christian-schooled ex-folkie given the name Ashley Schram by loving parents George and Janis.

"My record is full of angst," Riot says with a laugh. "It's not that my life's been that way, I've just absorbed how to write like that, I suppose, because of what I've listened to all my life - Nirvana and Joy Division, the goth stuff, The Cure. You don't hear too many happy songs from those bands, mostly just how-I'm-dying songs. To write a happy song just seems weird, honestly. Like, what do I say? 'Thank you for this happy day, I love you.' Yeah, I don't do that. I'll tell that to some body, not write it in a song."

Instead, Riot is happier writing a pop-punk track such as "Heroin Halo," a standout on her new CD, called This Time I'll Forgive You... Again, recorded by Rick Boulter at Surrey's Cosmic Pig Studios.

"It's not about somebody specific," she says of the song, "but there are so many people in the punk-rock scene who are my heroes, so it's (about) imagining what they went through - Sid Vicious, Kurt Cobain and Courtney, those people. It's an experience through their lives because I'd never touch hard drugs - just the occasional vodka or something, that's about it."
