BONE SCANNING OFFERED AT OSTEOPOROSIS CLINIC

February 21st 2009 - Recent research reveals that depression may be a significant risk factor for osteoporosis, a condition where a progressive decrease in bone density and structural integrity make bones fragile and more likely to break.

Low bone density is more common in depressed people than in the general population. Although it causes are unclear, major depression is associated with hormonal abnormalities that can lead to changes in tissue, such as bone. Higher cortisol levels, often found in depressed patients, may contribute to bone loss and changes in body composition.

The good news is that with early awareness and action, excessive bone loss can be prevented and may be reversed.

On Tuesday, Feb. 24th, Comox Rexall will be sponsoring an Osteoporosis Awareness Clinic where ultrasound bone density testing will be provided along with an overview of risk factors for osteoporosis.

"The emphasis of the Osteoporosis Awareness Clinic is to help participants become more aware of osteoporosis and to learn about fracture prevention strategies", says Phyllis Edwards, Densitometry Technologist. "One of our key goals is to inspire people to make lifestyle changes that can help them protect their bone health."
