Freeing Ourselves from the Binds of Karma

The subject of karma comes up often when we talk about our many journeys through life and how easily things can come back to bite us. Do we really understand what karma is though and what it really means? I used to think that the reason I was here was to clear up my karma.

That often had me wondering what was the point of my life and why would we come back over and over again for merely karmic reasons. I realized over time that karma wasn't exactly what I thought and there was a different way to look at it.

In Buddhist teaching, the law of karma, says only this:`for every event that occurs, there will follow another event whose existence was caused by the first, and this second event will be pleasant or unpleasant according as its cause was skillful or unskillful.' A skillful event is one that is not accompanied by craving, resistance or delusions; an unskillful event is one that is accompanied by any one of those things.

Over the last decade with the dawning of new age consciousness we have heard a lot about our need to clear our karma. Another karmic concept was delivered which explained that because of the acceleration of spiritual energies in our world we should expect more immediate returns from the universe for our actions in our lives. This was dubbed "instant karma".

Karma is not solely about us having to make up for past wrongs. This keeps our internal focus on the mindset of negative energies such as retribution or atonement. Karma or the idea of karma is really the idea of balance. Karma really only exists when we live in conflict with our true nature. This is the illusion of karma.

Anytime you knowingly do something in your life in such a manner that is in direct opposition to your true authentic self-this becomes your karma. Many believe that karma is like opposing forces -for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. This is not the case. Karma is really generated by inner conflict. If we do something against our core spiritual identity then we will try to balance through an equally energetic act that does not have to be an opposite. For instance, we do something evil and in order to clear the karma we must do something good.

What we must understand fully is this: As each of us emerges into consciousness of our true authentic selves we can exist outside the mind concept of karma. We can lose our attachment to karma existing as a balancing of opposing ideas. All we have to do is to perform our daily actions in an authentic nature, knowing it is an authentic act and execute that act to the best of our ability. When we do so we exist outside the concept of karma and release our attachment to it.
