Thriving on Change
Dealing with change

June 07th 2005 - It has been said that no one likes change except a wet baby. I don’t agree. Many people thrive on change. It keeps their lives exciting and fresh. It stimulates their intellect and keeps a steady flow of joy coming into their lives. As a child, we moved quite often. In fact, that was our idea of a summer vacation. Around age 9 I objected to one of our moves. My mother explained that I wouldn’t be losing any of my current friends. I could still keep in touch with them and make new friends as well! Although my mother probably did not know the word, it was a great reframe. I bought into it totally and it changed my attitude about the move.

My daughter is very sociable and does well with change. My son on the other hand with his moon in Taurus (for my astrologically inclined readers) truly hates change. He moved out on his own at 18 rather than move with me to a city a mere 15 miles away.

Since change is inevitable I wondered what approaches could we use to help ourselves and our clients deal with it more effectively. EFT comes to mind first. Here are some common phrases that come up with change:

Even though I like things just the way they are...

Even though I’m afraid of what will come next...

Even though I don’t like meeting new people...

Even though I worry that I won’t remember how to get around in this new city...

Even though I’m scared that my co-workers won’t like me...

Even though I have this knot in my stomach...

Even though I feel tired just thinking about learning a new job...

(If you don’t know EFT I am teaching a workshop June 11-12. Or go on Gary Craig’s website and download his free manual: www.emofree.com

Another tool for shifting our response to change is self hypnosis. Start by imagining yourself make these changes and feeling excited, feeling calm and relaxed. Write a positive affirmation (i.e. I love meeting new people or I’m completely comfortable with change) and create a positive mental picture of yourself making these changes and hold that image as you fall asleep at night. If you practice for seven consecutive nights you will notice a "change" in your attitude about change. If, during the day, you continue to hear concerns about change in your self-talk, stop your thoughts and repeat your affirmation. Tap on any negative thoughts or beliefs about change. Have fun creating a new aspect of your Self.
