Philosophy and Comments

Dancing Mountain is a studio space dedicated to the teaching of Yang Family Hidden Tradition Taijiquan and Gold Mountain Taoist School “Internal Skill” meditation. Our goal is to increase the health and well-being of students while learning skills that are of practical value in everyday life. Taijiquan is a unique system of martial arts and body development that was created in Taoist monasteries and refined over many centuries. At Dancing Mountain, students learn Yang Family Hidden Tradition Taijiquan. This form consists of a short introductory form, the Thirteen Postures which introduces principles and movements that are further developed in the Three Section Long form, Taiji Fan, Spear, and Sword forms. Students are also introduced to Gold Mountain Neigong Meditation .
Taoist practices were many and varied throughout Chinese history and influenced schools of philosophy, poetry, painting, natural religion, alchemical and geophysical sciences, and countless folk and ritual practices. Among the most elemental aspects of Taoism are cultivation of Human Nature and harmony within the landscape of relationship to our own internal forces and those external forces that interact with us.
TaijiQuan expresses many possibilities of body movement within the framework of “martial art”.
Practice is guided by the principles of softness overcoming hardness and students play with technique in order to promote the free flow of energy in the body for health and flexibility.
Jin Shan (Gold Mountain) Taoist Internal Energy Meditation is a unique feature of Dancing Mountain’s program. Students begin by learning Tu-na Dao Yin breathing techniques to increase health and energy and can progress to deeper techniques of meditation practice as they play.
These traditions were merged in the teaching of Zhang Qinlin (1887-1969), who studied TaijiQuan with Yang Jianhou and Gold Mountain Taoist Meditation with Zuo Yifeng.
Mike Basdavanos is a student of Wang Yen-nien and brings 35 years of practice to his classes. Mike is a member of the American Yang Family Michuan Taijiquan Association He currently teaches at Baltimore School of Massage and is a Diplomate of Asian Bodywork Therapy (NCCAOM) C.P. (AOBTA) & CMT State of Md.
Wang Yen-nien (1916-) of Taipei, Taiwan, ROC, studied intensively with Zhang Qinlin and teaches in Taiwan for the general public. He has been awarded status as a National Treasure in the field of TaijiQuan.
Kong Jing “Empty Force” Qi Gong is a breath and energy exercise promoting free flow of energy in the body. It serves as a powerful technique to gather Qi for personal development.

*Taiji Quan = Tai Chi Chuan

Dancing Mountain is happy to offer this program to students through workshops with John Cole L.Ac. and practice sessions at the studio.
Beginner’s Classes are ongoing and it is possible to join at any point. Learning about Qi entails entering the flow with your senses attuned to perceiving what is around you and within you. Like a good meditation, one does not remember beginning or ending because the present is made eternal.
