Profile and Credentials

Ernesto Ortiz was born in Mexico City, in 1951. As a child he frequently visited the family’s coffee plantation, where he learned a life style that would later mark the path of his teachings, influenced by “curaciones” and other practices carried by the Shamans of this land.

Around the age of 17, he started exploring "mind expanding" with teachers’ plants. He moved to San Diego, California where he studied textiles and photography, and at 21 his passion to study and photograph native cultures and “shamanism” took him on a two-year trip to South America. Upon his return to California, he established a business importing textiles from Ecuador, Perú and Bolivia; worked as a photographer for Kali Productions - an LA based company; and opened a retail business dealing with crystals and accessories. In 1990, inner-calling and a desire to share with others the accumulation of experiences and the ability to develop mind work stirred Ernesto to a new direction. In 1988 he moved to Florida where he founded “Journey to the Heart”.

Ernesto has been in the healing field for more than 20 years, has educated in schools such as, Educating Hands, the SE Institute of Oriental Medicine and Miami Dade Community College and has lectured at Florida State University and University of Miami.

Ernesto has spent many years studying and facilitating Indigenous Shamanic practices, and has studied with Michael Harner, Frank Natale, Robert Ghost Wolf, Starr Fuentes, Barrett Eagle Bear, Mary Parker, Helen Bony, Jackie Small and more. He is an honorary Ceremonial Pipe carrier from the Lakota Nation, his spiritual Grandmother/Sister Barrett Eagle Bear blessed him with this honor in 1996.

He has been featured in Allure, Cosmopolitan, and Selecta Magazines as one of the best massage therapists from coast to coast; in TV programs such as ‘Despierta America” (the Spanish version of Good Morning America), “Primer Impacto”, Galavisión, Telemundo/NBC; in radio shows like “Así contigo” and WLRN Public Radio, reaching an international audience of over 86 million people. Ernesto's has made his home base in Miami, Fl.

Ernesto Biography Update 2006

Noted artist, author and healer, Ernesto Ortiz has devoted his life to exploring and communicating the language of the heart, primal movement and deep inner spaces. Over the past 25 years, Ernesto has taken thousands of people on a journey from physical and emotional inertia to the freedom of ecstasy, from the chaos of the chattering ego-mind to the blessed emptiness of stillness and inner silence.

His Workshops and Retreats have an electric intensity that unifies the spiritual with the mundane, from the poetic discovery of the soul to the modern approach of ancient shamanic practices.

Ernesto is recognized in the holistic, health and metaphysical field as an inspiring facilitator, teacher and therapist. His training began at an early age in Mexico with Curanderos and Shamans and has continued for many years with world renowned teachers in Transpersonal Psychology, Shamanism, Music Therapy, Bodywork and more. In his private practice he is approved by the state of Florida and the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) as a continuing Education Provider. Ernesto utilizes numerous healing techniques such as Bodywork, CranioSacral Therapy, Karmapa Reiki, Integrative/Shamanic Techniques, Breathwork, the Akashic Records, SERT Therapy (Somato Emotional Repatterning Therapy), Music Therapy, Trance Dance and more.

In 1994 Ernesto created Journey to the Heart, a company dedicated to the upliftment of consciousness and the well-being of people by using practical tools to help integrate the physical with the mental, emotional and spiritual bodies. Providing tools for growth, the company offers a variety of classes and workshops: Hot Stone Massage, Karmapa Reiki; Akashic Records classes, Pendulum Dowsing Techniques. Psychospiritual Integration Workshops are also offered: Integrative Breathwork, Shamanic Breathwork, Shamanic Workshops, Trance Dance, Soul Hunting, and Relationship Workshops. Ernesto is a ceremonial pipe carrier; he received his pipe from his spiritual grandmother Barret Eagle Bear (Lakota).
